Are you going away this Summer? We’re heading for France, and Brittany will be our first stop. We were thrilled when JoJo Maman Bébé , which also started its life in Brittany, contacted us to ask whether we’d like to sample their new collection for AW16.
Laura Tenison, who created and runs JoJo Maman Bébé, was inspired by the way Breton families dressed their children in chic but practical clothes, so they could be active, whatever the weather. She decided to take the ethos to the UK, and set up a British business based in London and Wales, making quirky, high-quality clothes for babies, young children and pregnant women.
Here in London, the weather has alternated between sweltering heat, and torrential rain. Although it’s far too warm for an AW16 combo yet, it was good to be able to choose some clothes that will be ready and waiting for us when we return from France in September – and whose Breton influence will remind us of our break.
So one morning, after a rainshower, Gwen and I set off for the local park, to do a bit of puddle splashing. Gwen wore her choice of plain purple tights, a multi-stripe classic dress and patterned wellies, all from JoJo.
Gwen also chose a cosy fisherman’s coat, in ditsy floral, to match her wellies. The coat is made of thick, waterproof material with a snuggly fleece lining. These fisherman’s coats are a JoJo classic; friends who bought a similar coat tell us they are durable and long-lasting, as well as looking great. They’re available in a few different colours; my own favourite was the jaunty yellow, but our Gwen does love her florals (and who can blame her?).
I’ve been a fan of JoJo Maman Bébé ever since I bought my favourite piece of maternity wear – a trench coat – in their Clapham store back in 2009, when I was pregnant with my son. If the company’s dual Breton/Welsh heritage wasn’t enough to sell it to us, there’s also the work they do with charity: they support Nema, a charity working with communities in Mozambique. JoJo help fund local water, health, education and sanitation projects, and help reduce child poverty. They were also recently voted Best Employer in the Disability Awards.
Gwen’s coat, tights and warm dress have been firmly packed away now, till the cooler weather comes. No doubt they’ll make the Autumn puddle splashing all the more fun.
